College is almost finished for the year and you want to relax and take a vacation until next year. Well, before you do that you may want to consider applying for a scholarship or grant before there isn’t any use and it’s too late. Every year there are numerous scholarships and grants available to college students in their first, second or third year. It is wise to take those opportunities and use them, but did you know that even if you are not in school that there are grants and scholarships available for a wide range of people. From single moms, to divorced dads, to seniors wanting to return to school, there is likely a scholarship or grant available.

How do you find out about these scholarships and grants? A good way is to do a little research online and at your local college or university. See what available in your state and in your local area. You may learn that only half of the grants or scholarships out there are available for you.

Once you find out what is available the next step is to see if you can qualify for any of them. Some may require an essay or research project while others will look to your financial situation to help you out. There are even grants out there that are specific to your ethnic background or heritage. If you didn’t know that, simply look it up online or ask someone at your college in the careers department.

From here the next part is to do all the pre-requisites for the scholarship or grant. This can take some time but make sure you do a good job on it as these organizations will get hundreds, if not thousands of entries and they must sort through them to find ones that are worthy for their grant or scholarship. The best thing to do, if it’s a writing task, is to make it interesting and unique so that it can grab their attention.

So before hitting the waves and sun tanning in Florida, take a minute or two to look for some grants or scholarships that can be useful to you next year.

Final exams are approaching and if you didn't do well on your mid-terms, your final chance for getting a good grade is your final exam.

Final exams are approaching and if you didn’t do well on your mid-terms, your final chance for getting a good grade is your final exam. For many freshman’s, this may seem daunting and provoke anxiety attacks. One test can account for up to 50% of your grade for many classes. Here are some tips to ace that final exam.

Study Tips

Attend class and take notes. It’s important you attend every class. Many professors talk about new things that aren’t in the text that they will specifically put on your final exam. Even if it seems unnecessary, still put it in your notes.

Take two weeks to fully study before the final exam. Re-read chapters, do chapter reviews and make that information second nature to you.

Use study groups. Having other peers will help with information you may have overlooked.

Use the web. Many textbooks have a website where you can do extra curricular activities to help with studying. Rely on this tool and use it.

It’s also a great idea to know what kind of exam it is. Is it essay only? Multiple choice? Fill in the blank? A bit of everything? Essay exams may appear to be harder but can actually be easy if you know what to study for. Essay exams questions usually touch on the main theme or a main part of the course or book. Knowing what big themes are throughout the course will help you study. If the test is multiple choice, it’s fair game on what will be covered. Multiple choice tests usually have 100 or more questions and will have a mix of easy and difficult concepts. So prepare ahead!

It’s almost time for Christmas or Winter holiday and you need to keep your little ones busy. Most parents don’t want to plunk your child in front of the TV during the two week holiday but find it hard to find activities to keep them occupied. What’s important to remember is that you don’t want your child to forget everything he or she learned from September. Here are some activities and resource to use to help your child stay up to date in academics.

School Based Activities Over The Holidays

Activity Books – Whether your child is learning his ABC’s or trigonometry, there are activity books at your local grocery store or office supply store that will help your child keep up to date. If money is an issue, you can always go to your local library to find activity books and then photo copy them or go online to find activity sheets to print up.

Learning Games – There are many games out there that target certain skills like shapes, numbers, reading or phonics. Lucky Ducks is great for the little ones in learning their shapes.

Theme Days – What’s more fun than to have a theme day? Incorporate science, math, reading and gross motor activities all surrounded by a concept. Choose underwater sea adventure or outer space exploration and create snacks, activities, worksheets and games.

Let your child be the teacher – Have your child be the teacher and have them teach you what they are learning or have learned at school. Children really enjoy being an authority and have fun teaching their mom or dad.

So Christmas is around the corner and if you don’t have anything planned with your kids, you may end up pulling out your hair. Don’t despair moms! I have compiled a list of cool activities that you and your kids can do together. Don’t let the stress of planning a perfect Christmas dinner ruin the fun you can have with your little ones.

Activities To Do With Your Kids

Make a Gingerbread house – Kids love to do crafts so why not make a Gingerbread house. You can either pre-make the gingerbread components or buy a kit.

Go to the library – This is a great time to take your kids to the library. With Harry Potter and Twilight huge in popularity, libraries will well stocked with these books. Libraries will also have reading time for your little ones so take the time to see what the library has to offer.

Make Christmas decoration – Time to get your clothespins, pipecleaners, paint and plastic Christmas balls for decorations. Children love the holiday spirit so why not take an afternoon to making Christmas decorations for the Christmas tree, wreath or stair banister.

Plan a Movie Day – Take your children to the video store and have them pick out 8-10 movies that they can watch all day! Make popcorn, candied apples and fizzy punch for them to eat. Treat it like a lazy, all you can eat junk food day. Kids will love this and it will help you get the house chores done.

What a wonderful time now that Barack Obama is in office. He has done a lot in the field of education for moms, single moms and women in the United States. Any women over the age of 18 can apply for a Federal Pell Grant and earn up to $10,000 in a scholarship. This is free money! It isn’t a loan like most college assistance programs. Obama has done a great thing by increasing the funding for these scholarship grants.

Click here for the $10,000 scholarship for moms

With these scholarships you can attend the school you want and enter into the program you desire. Going back to school is a wonderful way for women, moms and single moms to find a career that they’ve desperately wanted but couldn’t have due to finances or family. Obama has solved the finance issue and has made it much easier for women over the age of 18 to want to go back to school and earn that degree.

Now that school is back in session fashion is one of the many things to think about. Many children want the latest and greatest fashion but with some simple tricks you can achieve the hottest look for very little money.
Here are the hot back to school fashion and ways to cut costs.

Back To School Fashion

Chunky Knits – Chunky knit sweaters, scarves, hats and tunics are the rave this season. What is great is that with yarn and some needles you can make your own chunky scarf or hat. A little knitting can go a long way.

Plaid Is Back – You see it everywhere on 90210 or in the magazines. Plaid is definitely back. Plaid pieces like jackets, shirts or skirts can be pricey so one way to have plaid in your wardrobe is with little pieces. Shoes come in plaid too and are relatively cheap.Buy some plaid yarn and use that as a head band. Be funky and paint your nails plaid! I’m sure everyone will be wanting that look.

Layers Are The Way To Go – Layers have been popular for some time so no need to get any extra pieces. Just pair long shirts with shorter hoodies and you’re ready to face the day.

Knee-High Boots – Knee-high boots and even Thigh-High boots are extremely popular this fall season. Go to discount stores to find some great pair of boots.

Skinny Jeans – Skinny was in last season and will be hot this season so keep your skinny jeans and pair then with boots and a chunky knit.

Back To School Savings

Don’t shop last minute – It’s important to start buying back to school supplies in July and August. Most sales will occur around this time so take advantage.

Shop alone – Believe it or not but your kids have an influence over you. They see the latest and flashiest calculator or pencils and they want it. It’s best, then, to do your back to school shopping when you are alone that way you won’t be influenced.

Shop at different stores – You will save quite a few buck if you shop around. Have the list of school supplies on you at all times and when you are out running errands, look for those supplies.

Avoid buying school supplies with cartoon or Disney characters on them – They may seem to be the rage right now but in 6 months from now your child will want to get the next best thing so purchase nondescript items that will last the entire school year.

Invest in a good backpack – Your child will put the rungs through their backpack so it’s best not to purchase a flimsy on sale ruck sack. Go to the camping section of a store and see if they have some durable and sturdy backpacks.

Purchase re-usable lunch storage items – Instead of wasting money on ziploc bags, why not re-use yogurt containers or sour cream containers and help the environment all at the same time? Start saving on store bough packaging so that you can use them to store your children’s lunch.

With a little effort and shopping around, you will find deals and ways to save on back to school. You children won’t know the difference when they head back to school so start saving today.

For many parents, the countdown begins until back to school. In a littler over a month now, school will be in full session which means it’s time to get preparing for back to school. There are steps to take for parents to make the transition to back to school run more smoothly. Here are some tips to get you started.

Back To School Preparation

Adjust Your Kid’s Sleep – I can guarantee that most kid’s are sleeping in and lavishing the late morning routine. Start changing your children’s sleep patterns a week or two before school actually starts. This will help them adjust quicker.

School Supplies – Don’t wait until the last minute to grab the essentials. Stores now are getting their inventory for back to school so take advantage now.

Set Up An Inbox For Papers – When school starts homework, notices and field trips will be coming home. Instead of letting those papers pile up, invest in an inbox for your children’s papers and one for parents. When your child comes home from shcool, your child will put notices and form for parents in your file and homework in their file.

Organize Your After School Activities – Get your child’s input when deciding on after school activities. Get a master calendar and note all the activities so they won’t conflict.

Get Your Checkups In Check – Schedule the routine teeth cleaning, eye appointment and haircut the last few weeks before school starts.

Re-establish Routine – Get back to family dinners and a story before bedtime.
