College is almost finished for the year and you want to relax and take a vacation until next year. Well, before you do that you may want to consider applying for a scholarship or grant before there isn’t any use and it’s too late. Every year there are numerous scholarships and grants available to college students in their first, second or third year. It is wise to take those opportunities and use them, but did you know that even if you are not in school that there are grants and scholarships available for a wide range of people. From single moms, to divorced dads, to seniors wanting to return to school, there is likely a scholarship or grant available.

How do you find out about these scholarships and grants? A good way is to do a little research online and at your local college or university. See what available in your state and in your local area. You may learn that only half of the grants or scholarships out there are available for you.

Once you find out what is available the next step is to see if you can qualify for any of them. Some may require an essay or research project while others will look to your financial situation to help you out. There are even grants out there that are specific to your ethnic background or heritage. If you didn’t know that, simply look it up online or ask someone at your college in the careers department.

From here the next part is to do all the pre-requisites for the scholarship or grant. This can take some time but make sure you do a good job on it as these organizations will get hundreds, if not thousands of entries and they must sort through them to find ones that are worthy for their grant or scholarship. The best thing to do, if it’s a writing task, is to make it interesting and unique so that it can grab their attention.

So before hitting the waves and sun tanning in Florida, take a minute or two to look for some grants or scholarships that can be useful to you next year.

Final exams are approaching and if you didn't do well on your mid-terms, your final chance for getting a good grade is your final exam.

Final exams are approaching and if you didn’t do well on your mid-terms, your final chance for getting a good grade is your final exam. For many freshman’s, this may seem daunting and provoke anxiety attacks. One test can account for up to 50% of your grade for many classes. Here are some tips to ace that final exam.

Study Tips

Attend class and take notes. It’s important you attend every class. Many professors talk about new things that aren’t in the text that they will specifically put on your final exam. Even if it seems unnecessary, still put it in your notes.

Take two weeks to fully study before the final exam. Re-read chapters, do chapter reviews and make that information second nature to you.

Use study groups. Having other peers will help with information you may have overlooked.

Use the web. Many textbooks have a website where you can do extra curricular activities to help with studying. Rely on this tool and use it.

It’s also a great idea to know what kind of exam it is. Is it essay only? Multiple choice? Fill in the blank? A bit of everything? Essay exams may appear to be harder but can actually be easy if you know what to study for. Essay exams questions usually touch on the main theme or a main part of the course or book. Knowing what big themes are throughout the course will help you study. If the test is multiple choice, it’s fair game on what will be covered. Multiple choice tests usually have 100 or more questions and will have a mix of easy and difficult concepts. So prepare ahead!

For most high school graduates who are moving on to college, the next step can be anxious and daunting. With September around the corner most college-bound students are getting ready for the big move but have no idea what to expect. Many are moving to a new state and have to get acquainted with the new city and new people and new college life. To make your transition easier, here are some steps to follow before heading off to college.

Visit The Campus

The most important step to do before your first day of college is to visit the campus at least once or twice. Get a map and learn the basic buildings such as the Student Union Building, the arts section, the science section, the main library and the registration office. Also note nearby shopping centers and bus stops. If you already have your class schedule, locate the buildings and room numbers so that panic doesn’t strike on the first day.

Find Out Any College Organizations

Go to your colleges website and find if there are any college organizations such as a psychology club, anthropology club or music club. Joining an organization will help you grow your social list and get you more acquainted with college life.

Meet Your Rommate(s)

It’s a good idea to find out who you will be rooming with for the year. If you can’t meet them before school starts, then make an effort to hang out with them and get to know their likes and dislikes. It’s always a good idea to be on best term basis with your roomates as you will be bunking with them for the entire school year. You never know, though, they could become one of your life long friends.

Get College Essentials

Make sure you have the following for college:

A Laptop – Laptop is a priority for homework, research, and essays.

Money For Textbooks – textbooks cost a lot of money so save a chunk for those expensive texts.

Basic School Supplies – binders, notebooks, pens and pencils. You probably won’t be writing a lot but if your professor doesn’t allow laptops for note taking, have a notebook handy.

Paying for college can be a huge expense. No wonder why many students have college loans to help pay for their studies. Going to college is something many people want to do or are doing and feel it will get them further in the employment market. In the long run, college degree earners will earn more than non-college degree earners. College degree earners, though, have college loans to pay back. Well now it’s easier to do.

Anyone with a federal student loan out there can now apply for a new program that will help them substantially. This new program will caps monthly payments at 15% of the borrowers income and will forgive outstanding balances after 25 years. Another good thing is interest rates and loan fees will also be cut.

This is great news for many graduates. Take advantage of this opportunity today.
